What a wind mitigation inspection checks

A wind mitigation inspection verifies the construction features that help a house hold up in a hurricane. Florida insurers are required to offer discounts for these features, and the inspection is how you prove you have them. We record each item on the state’s Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802) with photos:

  • Building code the roof was built to
  • Roof covering and its permit or install date
  • Roof deck attachment: nail size and spacing
  • Roof-to-wall attachment: toe-nails, clips, single or double wraps
  • Roof shape: hip roofs score better than gables
  • Secondary water resistance under the roof covering
  • Opening protection: impact windows, doors and shutters

Why it can lower your premium

In South Florida the windstorm part of a homeowner’s policy is often the largest piece. If your house has features like hurricane straps, a hip roof or impact-rated openings, the form documents them so your insurer can apply the credit. Homeowners who just replaced a roof often get one, as one of our clients did after putting on a new roof.

Miami-Dade and Broward: the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone

Miami-Dade and Broward sit in Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, where the building code is stricter. We note the code your roof was built to, which affects how the form is scored.

The strap that holds the roof on

Roof-to-wall attachment is checked from the attic. Move the light to find the strap tying the truss to the block wall.

Straps, clips and wraps each score differently on the form. We photograph what your house actually has.
